U.S. military policy “backed by most extreme anti-LGBT hate groups,” SPLC

SAN JUAN (Puerto Rico Buzz) – David Dinielli, Deputy Legal Director at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), blasts U.S. President Donald Trump’s transgender military service policy in the military, today.

“Thousands upon thousands of transgender people have served and are serving this country with honor and courage,” said David Dinielli.

Trump believes that military service-members who are transgender increase military spending. According to the president’s Twitter account, transgender people will not be allowed to serve.

Not everyone is against Trump’s decision to ban transgender people from serving.

“The U.S. Military decision on transgender people will incite crazy rage today. However, STOP comparing it to real Civil Rights. IT’S NOT,” said Pastor Greg Locke on Twitter.

The Family Research Council (FRC) goes even further in their published research saying that transgender people have high levels of psychopathology.

“Family Research Council has concerns about the psychological fitness of persons who identify as transgender to serve (because of high levels of psychopathology within that population), and about the effect of allowing people to present themselves as the opposite of their biological sex on good order and discipline, readiness, recruitment, and retention. However, in addition to these concerns, there are specific costs that will be associated with allowing people who identify as transgender to serve, such as particular medical issues associated with the practices of gender reassignment surgery and hormone replacement therapy,” said a study by FRC.

“The RAND Corporation undertook an analysis of this question in 2016, and came up with a broad-range estimate that the health-related costs of gender transition would total between $2.4 million and $8.4 million annually (i.e., between $24 million and $84 million over ten years). However, these estimates were drawn from actuarial data based on the estimated increase in insurance premiums for private employers who adopted coverage for gender transition.7 Since the military pays for the health care of active duty service members directly, it is more logical to look at the direct costs of such procedures. In addition, the RAND study made estimates of lost time due to recovery from gender reassignment surgery, but placed no dollar value on this indirect, but very real cost to the armed forces,” said the FRC.

Kristing Beck, a retired Navy Seal who is transgender challenged Trump’s ban.

“Let’s meet face to face and you tell me I’m not worthy,” said Beck to the Business Insider. “Transgender doesn’t matter. Do your service.”

It is important to note that Trump has never served in the military. Some considered the president a Vietnam conflict “draft dodger.”

According to an article posted by Politifact in 2015:

“Ronald Kuby, a criminal and civil rights lawyer and talk show host, appeared on WABC-AM in New York City on July 15, 2015, three days before Trump made his controversial comments. Kuby highlighted the multiple student deferments Trump received, and how he finally got a medical exemption that staved off the draft.

Trump “was a Vietnam draft dodger,” Kuby said.

We asked Kuby what he meant and he explained, “I use the term broadly to mean anyone who took advantage of deferments to avoid being drafted.”

The SPLC statement added:

But while these brave men and women risk their lives for all of us, in every corner of the world, 24 hours a day, President Trump tweets out a disgraceful, discriminatory policy backed by the country’s most extreme anti-LGBT hate groups that will do nothing to make anyone safer.

This policy only serves to throw fuel on the fire of hatred and fear, making an already-vulnerable population even more vulnerable. The Southern Poverty Law Center stands with all transgender and gender-nonconforming Americans, whether civilian or military. Neither Trump nor his childish tweets can stop our march toward dignity and equality.

The SPLC is a legal non-profit team that fights hate and bigotry using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy. You can find out more information about the SPLC here.

***Update***: Sen. John McCain, Republican senator from Arizona, has officially opposed Trump’s ban on transgender people.

“Any American who meets current medical and readiness standards should be allowed to continue serving,” said McCain. “There is no reason to force service members who are able to fight, train, and deploy to leave the military—regardless of their gender identity.”

McCain was a prisoner of war during the Vietnam conflict.

Rosselló Asks Police Officers to Return to Work

(SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Buzz) – Gov. Ricardo Rosselló asked members of the Puerto Rico Police Department to return to work, Jan. 8.

The massive absenteeism of police officers has been largely attributed to the lack of overtime pay in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, but some say it goes back even further.

“I ask of any partner of the uniformed force that is not attending [work]at this moment – I ask of them to return,” said Rosselló. It’s not just about giving a message about a series of initiatives, but it’s a matter of safety for our people.

Rosselló is currently evaluating how police officers that missed work, will be reprimanded.

“We’re establishing which administrative measures will take place,” said Rosselló. There’s a lot of information that needs to be gathered.

At times, approximately 8,000 police officers have missed worked, out of about 14,000 islandwide.

Police union representatives have said that police officers are using their sick and holiday time available.
